Productive Environment Blog
The best part of the last few days of December is that they are a natural moment for a fresh start; my nearly 19-year-old son gets it: yesterday, he changed the sheets on his bed, cleaned and vacuumed his room, and did all of his laundry – without being asked!
My late mother had two tasks she loved doing on the last two days of the year: taking down the Christmas tree and reversing the hangers in her closet.
I love my mom’s easy way to reset and start the year fresh. I agree that the last day of the year is the perfect time to reset your closet and set yourself up for success in the New Year. This will help you gain clarity about what you wear and love over the next year.
Today, take 10 minutes to reverse the hangers for all hanging garments in your closet. The process is easy: flip them so the hooks face you instead of away. It is simple but powerful: this small action sets up a built-in system to track your clothing usage for a year.
If you wear something throughout the year, rehang it correctly (hook facing away). If you take something off a reversed hanger but decide NOT to wear it, put it back reversed. This ensures that only worn items earn their spot on a forward-facing hanger.
I love this process because it is easy to implement, and most of all, IT WORKS!
Starting now means you’ll have a complete 12-month snapshot of what you wear, which will help you make smarter wardrobe decisions next December.
By the end of 2025, every reversed hanger will show you precisely what you didn’t wear, making it easy to decide what to keep, donate, or reconsider.
Doesn’t it feel good to start the year with a clean slate and a clearer sense of your style?
