Productive Environment Blog
Are you a meticulous “diariser”? A new-age digital app geek? Or a fly by the seat of your pants/go with the flow/expect the unexpected kind of person?
Personally, I don’t think anyone was ever accused of using the ‘wrong’ planning method as long as they get from A to B in their day without too much drama!
Most of us have a calendar, whether it sits on your desk, tucks into your bag, or has you questioning your sanity every time your smart device ‘pings’ with a notification. And we all like to think we are perfectly organised.
But I’ve come to the realisation that my perfect planner needs to contain more than just the bare bones of my daily schedule. With information coming at us from all directions at the same time, trying to keep your attention focussed on what needs to be done is like trying to keep your eyes trained on a line drawn in the sand in the middle of a tropical cyclone (hurricane).
There are things I’d like to do, things I need to do, and things I may get to. Or not (it depends how I feel at the time.)
So, how should I keep all these balls juggling in the air, and not hitting me on the head as I drop them? Well, we all know that we can rely on our SwiftFile to keep us on track. And some people have modified WorkFlowy to help them do the same.
But what about those of us who like a physical planner to help us stay in control? Do we go out and buy a fancy planner, with pages and pages of content we need to enter? Set up a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and colour-coordinated ‘spread’ of washi tape, muted highlighters, and carefully curated ephemera?
Well you can. If that’s what makes you happy, and helps you stay organised. But we don’t all have the time, the patience, and/or the skills to produce a work of art. Some of us would much prefer functionality over frivolity.
So, what I’m currently researching is the art and science of Bullet Journaling.
See, what I’m looking for is something that keeps my schedule, my future plans, my reflections and my ideas in one place. And the practice of bullet journaling covers all of that.
It also provides an organised system of creating lists and tracking habits that need to be monitored.
How about you? Have you tried bullet journaling? What was your experience? Would you like to hear more about how the practice of bullet journaling might improve your productivity? Would you like to give it a try yourself?
Please don’t be shy! I really am interested in your opinions here. Please feel free to comment below - I’d love to get a discussion happening, and we’re all friends here.
In the meantime, if you need me I’ll be at my desk testing my pens and markers on different paper thickness’ and designing some more habit trackers…..
