Productive Environment Blog
We all have that one thing on our to-do list that lingers for days, weeks, or even months. For me, it was a stack of paperwork related to my late father’s insurance—a tedious 12 pages I had been avoiding like the plague. Last week, I finally sat down to tackle it, and guess what? It took all of 20 minutes to finish. The energy I spent procrastinating far outweighed the effort it took to complete the task.
Procrastination often stems from a few psychological blocks. The common blocks I see with my clients are the feeling of overwhelm—the bigger the task seems, the more we avoid it (even if it’s manageable!) once we start—and perfection paralysis—when we tell ourselves it needs to be done perfectly, which makes starting feel impossible.
I know how my clients feel, and I've felt the same way and what I've found is that the sense of relief and accomplishment is worth it when you finally finish that task. It felt like a weight had been lifted for me, and I wondered why I hadn’t done it sooner. The mental space it cleared up was priceless.
So today, take 10 minutes to tackle that thing you’ve been avoiding. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t have to finish the whole project— just start. You might find it’s not as laborious or time-consuming as you thought, and the peace of mind you’ll gain will make it well worth the effort.
I hope you have a productive week!
