Clutter Is Never Just Physical: Why It’s a Spiritual Issue

After nearly five decades of working with individuals and organizations,Barbara Hemphill has realized one truth that has become increasingly clear: clutter is never just physical.

Clutter often begins quietly. It starts with small, seemingly insignificant decisions postponed “for later.” Over time, those postponed decisions accumulate and begin to shape environments, behaviors, and even beliefs, often without being noticed.

At Productive Environment Institute (PEI), clutter is understood as more than excess paper, digital overload, or disorganized spaces. Clutter Is Postponed Decisions®. Postponed decisions affect clarity, focus, and integrity. When decisions are delayed repeatedly, intention fades and disorder takes its place.

This concept extends beyond personal and professional environments. When observing what is happening in communities, institutions, and society at large, the same pattern emerges. Small compromises compound. A lack of intention leads to confusion. Over time, the consequences become visible.

PEI teaches that a productive environment is an intentional setting. Intentionality requires honoring values, principles, and purpose in everyday decisions. This includes what is allowed into an environment, what is acted upon, and what is consciously let go. Without intention, clutter grows by default.

Being intentional is not limited to physical spaces. It includes conversations, relationships, commitments, and the choices individuals make about who they support and do business with. Every decision contributes to the environment being created, whether consciously or unconsciously.

When individuals align their actions with deeply held values, clarity follows. Productive environments emerge not from perfection, but from consistent, intentional decision making. This alignment allows people to honor what matters most while creating spaces, physical, digital, and relational, that support focus, integrity, and purpose.

At Productive Environment Institute, this is the foundation of intentional settings. These are environments designed to support meaningful work, thoughtful decisions, and lives that reflect what individuals truly value.

Clutter is never just physical. It is a signal and an invitation to return to intention.

Andrea started her career in education before moving to work as an in-home family counselor helping troubled children and their families. Whether she knew it at the time or not, this was also the start of what would become her life's calling.

Though she found being a counselor gratifying, what called to her was the business's streamlining and organizational systems. Soon she found herself in the administrative offices and working as the operations manager. It was the perfect segue to meeting The Paper Tiger Lady. Shortly after, she graduated as one of Barbara's Certified Productive Environment Specialists™ and the rest is history!
