Reflections Not Resolutions

How are you at making or keeping New Year’s Resolutions? I’ll admit I am not good at either one. I guess I just stopped making resolutions, when I had such trouble keeping them.

Well, the other day I was helping my sister, get her second grade classroom back in order during their recent teacher workday. I came across a worksheet that caught my eye, “New Year Reflections”. Now, I thought that sounded like something I would like to do and maybe a bit less intimidating than writing out ‘Resolutions’ (After all I found it in a second grade classroom.).

Try it with me. Get a piece of paper and a pencil and write the answers to the following:

1. When thinking back on last year, what are you most thankful for?

2. What do you most look forward to in the new year?

3. Describe one new skill you learned last year.

4. What is something you hope to learn in the coming year?

5. If you could change one thing about last year, what would it be? Why?

6. Describe one wish you have for the new year.

7. What was the best book you read last year? Why did you like it?

8. What is one goal you have set for the new year? Why is it important?

Now, we really didn’t have to do any tough goal setting, but we did come away with some actual direction for 2010 and a bit of a look back at 2009.

I will be posting a follow up blog to this, because while I may not make resolutions, I do know that goal setting is important.  I will suggest a process that may help make  it easier, so come back.

(The worksheet I referenced above is made to be turned into a spinner and used in a group setting. It is a good activity for kids as well as adults.  If you would like to access the worksheet visit www.lauracandler.com)
